Caught Inside

“From the moment the shark attacked him, Chris Blowes was in a race against time. He should have died, but he didn’t.”

Written by Chris Blowes and the doctor who was on duty that day, Michelle Cresp, Caught Inside showcases how many divine elements came together that day – friends, surfers, paramedics, doctors and nurses, even the shark itself – in an unlikely string of events that somehow led to Chris’s survival from an event that should surely have killed him.

This story is about him – and it’s about them. How a little coastal town in South Australia pulled together one terrifying, rainy Anzac Day to bring Chris Blowes back from the brink and give him a second chance. And it’s about how anyone person can open channels of growth and hope for others and the power of collective recovery.

“I was living in Adelaide when I heard about Chris Blowes’ accident at Right Point, a break mere meters from one of my favourite childhood beaches; Fishery Bay. Reading about Chris’ encounter with the shark and his subsequent resuscitation was as incredible as it was horrifying, and it was during these segments that I flew through the pages of Caught Inside at a frenetic pace. When Chris’ healing began at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Caught Inside turned a softer and more thoughtful direction at the helm of Doctor Michelle Cresp, who empathically reconnects with the individuals who were involved in preserving Chris’ life on that fateful Anzac Day in 2015. It was so interesting, as a reader, to be provided with an insight in to the collective experience of so many other diverse individuals, many of whom questioned their actions on that day. In conducting her interviews, Michelle was, as she puts it, able to assist in rewriting their ‘trauma scripts’. As an example, we learnt that Chloe, the young ambulance officer, heavily questioned her decision to allow Chris’ friend Brock to ride in the ambulance that day. However, having spoken to Brock, Michelle was able to reassure Chloe that Brock wasn’t traumatised from hearing the medical jargon, and rather didn’t think much about his decision to ride shotgun at all. Chloe’s story was just one of many satisfying anecdotes that allow for the reader to see that this story wasn’t just about Chris, and it was, in fact, even less about the shark. Adelaide is a small place, and having seen Chris and Chloe on the odd occasion, it has been easy for me to take their situation at face value and simply see a young, fun and easy going couple. And while I am sure they are all of those things, it’s a reminder to not discount the vast and challenging individual journeys of those around us.”
